This test provides an orientational screening for Legionella pneumophila. Legionella can occur naturally in many water systems, such as surface water and groundwater. Generally, they do not cause health problems there. At temperatures between 25°C and 50°C, as is often the case in artificially created hot water systems, the bacteria feel comfortable, which can lead to a strong reproduction.
Large hot water systems with long and highly branched pipelines, as well as poorly maintained equipment and systems in which water stagnation frequently occurs, are therefore susceptible to such contamination with Legionella. Infection with Legionella can cause the so-called Legionnaires' disease, a form of pneumonia. Infection occurs when the pathogens are inhaled through fine water droplets (aerosols).
